Used in relation to the economic, political, legislative and social events and processes that brought about an end to the system of slavery in specific countries. Within the context of the United Kingdom the term is used to refer to events occurring in the decades following the passing of acts of parliament to abolish the slave trade and slavery throughout the British Empire, in 1807 and 1833 respectively.
